Inserting Excel file using OLE

Issue

You would like to include an Excel file your drawing. However, when you added the Excel file and then tried to edit it, the updated information was not displayed.

Solution

When you insert OLE objects, you can either create a new file or create one from an existing file (Graphic 1). If you use either of these options, only the data displayed in the cells when the file is closed will display. If you add additional information to the spreadsheet it will not display.

Instead of just inserting the objects, you should use the Link option (Graphic 2). This will attach the OLE object to the drawing instead of embedding it. The benefit of using this method is that new information that was not originally part of the cell data will be displayed in the Excel file.

Note: When you use this method, the .xls file is now a child of the drawing and it will need to be maintained accordingly.
