Error 1406 during Autodesk Inventor® install

When you tried to install Autodesk Inventor®, the installation stopped and you received the following error message:

1406-Could not write value to key

This error is due to insufficient permissions and/or a security conflict with a registry subkey. This error will occur even if the user has full rights to the registry and/or administrative privileges.

To resolve this issue, you need to give full control to the registry key that contains the applicable registry subkey for the active user account and the local system account. Follow these steps:

1. In the 1406 Error window, note the specific location of the registry subkey.
2. Exit the installation.
3. On the Start menu (Windows), click Run.
4. In the Run dialog box, enter regedit. Click OK.
5. In the Registry Editor, browse to the registry subkey that was displayed in the 1406 Error window.
6. Right-click on the registry key that contains the registry subkey. Click Permissions.
7. In the Permissions dialog box, Click Advanced.
8. In the Advanced Security Settings dialog box, locate the following user accounts:
   
   • The current login account. For example, “Joe User (joe.user@mycompany.com).”
   • The local system account. For example, “SYSTEM.”



9. Select the current login account. Click Edit.
10. In the Permission Entry dialog box, click Clear All.
11. Under Permissions, select the Allow check box for Full Control. Click OK.
12. In the Advanced Security Settings dialog box, select the local system account. Click Edit.
13. In the Permission Entry dialog box, click Clear All.
14. Under Permissions, select the Allow check box for Full Control.
15. Click OK to close each dialog box.
16. Close the Registry Editor.

You should now be able to install Inventor.

Note: You may experience multiple 1406 errors during the installation. You will need to repeat this procedure for each registry subkey that produces a 1406 error.
