'Invalid' message when binding external reference drawings in AutoCAD Release 14

  bindptch.txt

  bindptch.arx (59 Kb)

An Invalid message displays on the command line when binding external reference (xref) drawings in AutoCAD Release 14 when the xref was created or saved in AutoCAD 2000. The following message is displayed on the command line:
    Command: _xref Regenerating drawing.
    *Invalid*

The workaround is to use the utility, bindtptch.arx, for removing AutoCAD 2000 data from the drawing so that AutoCAD Release 14 can bind the xrefs to the host or parent drawing.

The bindtptch.arx utiltiy removes the following AutoCAD 2000 data from attached xrefs:

  • Long object names, including linetypes, text styles, blocks, layers, and dimension styles with names longer than 32 characters
  • Path information for external reference blocks
  • The "is plottable" setting and plot tstyle name settings from all layers
  • Dimension style overrides
  • All extended entity data
