Education Community License Update FAQ

Frequently asked questions about the recent update to the Autodesk Education Community License and Services Agreement (LSA).

What was the primary change to the LSA?

The primary change to the LSA was the extension of the permissions to use free software downloaded from the Education Community for instructional use in the classroom by students and faculty on their own personal computers.  Previously free software licenses made available via the Education Community could not be used in the classroom.


When does this go into effect?

This change was effective on October 1, 2012.


Can I now use the free software for commercial purposes?

No, these licenses are meant for educational purposes only.


Why does the LSA on the software differ from the messaging on the Education Community?

The LSA accompanying the current shipping product will not reflect the newly expanded permissions; however, the notification published on the Education Community overrides certain restrictions contained in the LSA accompanying the software.  LSA changes covering the permission expansion will be integrated into the LSA that accompanies the next major release of our software products.

Is this change product- and/or version-specific?

All current downloadable products from the Education Community are included within the scope of this change.


How does the education software differ from commercial versions?

The Student version downloaded from the Education Community will be the same programmatically; however, there will be some technical behavioral differences. A watermark will appear on output files generated by many of the software products available to students via the Education Community.


Does this change affect existing Education Community members?

If you are already a member of the Education Community, you can now use all the software that you have downloaded in the past, as well as any software that you choose to download in the future for instructional purposes in classrooms.


Do I need to redownload, reintall and reactive my software to take advantage of the LSA?

No, the software has not been updated to reflect the new LSA yet.


To use this license in the classroom, does each student have to download his or her own license?

Yes, to access free software in the classroom, each individual will need to download his or her own license from the Education Community.


Can institutions download free software for their classroom and lab environments?

No, the Education Community is available only for individual students and individual faculty members.


Is the watermark still in the software?

Yes, but effective the next release of our software, student licenses will no longer include a watermark.
