Cannot embed PDF files in a 64 bit version of Inventor

Problem

  1. Create a new Inventor drawing
  2. Go to the Manage tab on the ribbon and select the "Insert Object" command.
  3. Select "Create from File" option and select a PDF file, Don't check the Link checkbox.
  4. Select Ok to place the OLE in the drawing file.

    You will get following "Could not Insert Object” dialog

Note: This problem only happens when you try to embed the file. When you check the "Link" checkbox, the PDF gets correctly linked to the drawing.

Solution

This problem happens for both Adobe Reader 9 and Adobe X on Vista or Win 7 64 bit OS.
Any 64 bit application (e.g. Inventor, WordPad) is unable to embed OLE objects that are generated by a 32 bit application (e.g. PDF).
