Frequently asked questions about online license transfer using the License Transfer Utility (LTU).

What is Online License Transfer?

Online License Transfer (OLT) is a feature that uses the License Transfer Utility (LTU) to move an active stand-alone license to another computer over the Internet. The LTU exports your license and “parks” it on Autodesk servers. Once a license has been exported, the product is disabled on the exporting computer.  You can then import your license onto another machine and activate an installation of the same product and serial number.

Which product versions use the LTU?

The LTU is only available with our 2010 and later products. If you're using a 2009 or earlier version, you need to use the Portable License Utility instead. 



Can I run the LTU from within my Autodesk product?

No. The LTU is a standalone application and cannot be run from within your product. It can be found in the Start menu for the Autodesk product you want to transfer.

Note: The LTU can only transfer previously activated licenses of the same Autodesk product and serial number. For example, you can’t export a license from Revit Architecture 2013 and import it into AutoCAD 2013. Similarly, you can’t export a license from one serial number of AutoCAD 2013 and import it into a different serial number of AutoCAD 2013.



How often may I use the License Transfer Utility?

There is no limit on how many times you can export and import your license; however, you cannot export more licenses than you actually own.



My Autodesk product is installed on two machines (home and work), can I export a license for each?

No.  While some Autodesk products allow installation on a home and work machine, you can only export the number of licenses you actually own.



Can you set a time limit for publicly exported licenses?

No, it is not possible to set a time limit for an exported license. Once an exported license has been imported to another machine, it remains there until exported again.



Which license types does the LTU work with?

The LTU only works with Stand-Alone and Multi-Seat Stand-Alone licenses.  It does not work with Network licenses, which continue to use the license borrowing feature.



What happens if I don't export my license before making changes to my system?

Replacing or reconfiguring hardware on your computer before exporting your license can cause your license to be invalidated, meaning you will have to reactivate your product before using it again.  For more information, read our Product Reactivation FAQs.



What happens if a person leaves the company prior to importing a privately exported license?

Privately exported licenses will automatically convert to public export status if they are not imported within 14 days. This is a fixed time period and cannot be adjusted.



I don’t want my users to export licenses, can I prevent this?

Yes. For most products, you can choose not to install the LTU from the main product installer. You may also omit the LTU from deployments. If you are running Windows you can also remove the LTU by choosing to modify your installation in Control Panel.



Is there an offline method for transferring my license?

No, an Internet connection is required to export or import a license. There is no alternative method for transferring stand-alone licenses.



What port is used by the LTU for transfer communication?

Port 443 (SSL); the same port as used by Register Today.
