Cannot install Inventor 2012 on a machine that has Inventor 2013 installed

Issue

If Inventor 2013 is installed first and you then try to install Inventor 2012 on the same computer, the Inventor 2012 installation will fail with following error message:

 

More general,  when you install  Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Sp1 in any possible way  (via a Microsoft update or by installing software that requires Visual C++ 2010 Sp1), the Inventor 2012 installation will fail on that machine.

Explanation

The Inventor 2013 installer upgrades Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 to Service Pack 1 level (SP1).

However  Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Sp1 is incompatible with Inventor 2012,  which requires Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 without service pack.

Solution

  • uninstall Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Sp1 first
  • install  Inventor 2012
  • reinstall Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Sp1 from the Microsoft website
