64-bit: Configuring ODBC Excel and Access Connections

Issue

If you have a 64-bit Vista or Windows 7 operating system with 32-bit Microsoft Office installed and 64-bit Map 3D or Civil 3D, you may receive errors such as “An external component has thrown an exception”, “Failed to Connect”, “Failed to create the data source file:  XXXXX”, or “Test connection failed because of an error” when trying to connect to an Excel or Access file via either the ODBC FDO provider or a link template.

This is happens because 64-bit Map 3D or Civil 3D software requires 64-bit drivers for the connection, but 32-bit Microsoft Office installs 32-bit drivers.  See below for directions on how to install 64-bit drivers for your system.

Solution

Option 1: Uninstall Office, and install Office 64-bit.

Option 2:

  • Download the Redistributable Engine from Microsoft (see http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=13255 )
  • Uninstall Office.
  • Install the Engine from above.
  • Install Office 2007 (only available in 32-bit).
  • You can check your Office version in any of the products under File – Help.  Look on the right side for something like the below.
