How to Obtain a Network License File from Autodesk

Scenario

You’re setting up one or more license servers to host your Autodesk network-licensed products and you want to know how to obtain a license file for those products and servers.

Solution

After planning your network and installing the Network License Manager (NLM), you will need to obtain a network license file from Autodesk. This license file contains important licensing and server information and is used to configure your server so that you can run the NLM.

Note: Although the images in this guide show AutoCAD 2012 as an example, the concepts and procedures apply to all Autodesk 2012 (and later) products.


Obtaining a network license file consists of four tasks:

Collect License Server Info

Before you can request a license file from Autodesk you need to collect and provide some information about your Network License server(s). Depending on the server model you have chosen, you will need to collect the following information:

Single Server Model:

  • Server Host name and Physical address

Redundant Server Model:

  • Server Host name and Physical address for all three servers

Distributed Server Model:

  • Quantity of servers
  • Host name and Physical address of Master server
  • Number of seats on the Master server
  • Total number of seats

Request License File

After collecting the appropriate server information, you are ready to request a license from Autodesk.

  1. Go to https://registeronce.autodesk.com.
  2. If you have already registered your product, enter your Autodesk ID and Password and then click Login.  If you have not yet registered your product, you will need to Create an Autodesk ID.

  1. Select the account where your product is registered and click Next.

  1. Select the correct Operating System and enter your product serial number.  Click Next.

  1. Select your Network server type and provide the appropriate server information, which you collected in the above task, Collect License Server Info. Click Next when you are ready to proceed.

  1. Your license file is then issued and will be emailed to the address associated with your Autodesk ID as a “.lic” file attachment.

Note: Your license file will also appear as text in the body of the email, which you can copy and paste to a text editor and save according to the instructions below.



Save License File

Once you receive your license file, you must save it on your license server. We recommend you save your license file to the location where you installed your Network License Manager in a new folder called “Licenses”. Here are examples of this location for different operating systems:

Windows:

C:\Program Files\Autodesk Network License Manager\Licenses

Mac:

/Users/<user id>/adsknlm

Linux:

/home/<user id>/adsknlm

Note: You can name the license file anything you would like but it must have a “.lic” extension.

Confirm License File accuracy

After saving your license file, it is important to confirm that it contains the correct information.  Your license file will only work on the machine that has the same Physical address. You can modify the Host Name in your License file but not the Physical address. 

To confirm the accuracy of your license file:

  1. Open up the license file using a text editor (such as Notepad).

    Note: Do not use Microsoft Word or any other word processing program that might modify the formatting of the license file.

  2. The first line of the license file, beginning with SERVER will list your Host Name and Physical address.

    Note: For Redundant Server Models, the first three lines will show the Host Name and Physical address for the servers.


  1. Verify that the Physical address matches your server’s. If it does not match, you will need to request a new license file with the correct information.

When you have verified that your license file is correct, you can close it and move onto the last step of Configuring your Server.
