LiveUpdate fails to apply service pack on Inventor 2012 or Inventor LT 2012

Problem

In some cases, when you download and install an Inventor 2012 or Inventor LT 2012 service pack via LiveUpdate, you might encounter a Live Update Error after you click the Update button on the Autodesk Live Update web page.

This issue usually occurs if you only installed Inventor 2012 but no other Autodesk products. Here is a more detailed scenario.

You  start the LiveUpdate functionality via Communication Center  in Inventor 2012 or Inventor LT 2012  while  no service packs has been applied to the product.

When LiveUpdate detects that a new service pack is available, you are presented with the following or similar Live Update web page

After hitting the “Update” button on the page, the service pack fails to install with following error message

The complete text of the message is as follows:
“Error Applying Patch
The Communication Center was unable to apply the Live Update service pack.
Please restart your computer, launch your application and click the Live Update link in the Communication Center."

Solution

• Download and unzip attached zip file to any folder on your local drive
• Run the .reg file by double clicking it.
• Run LiveUpdate as explained in the Problem section

The installation of the service pack via Live Update will  now proceed without errors after hitting the Update button.
