How to find your Host Name and Physical Address

Scenario

You are trying to set up a Network license for your Autodesk software and need to find your Host Name and Physical address.

Solution

To set up a Network license for your Autodesk software you will need to find the Host Name and Physical address of the server(s) that will be running the Network License Manager (NLM).  This information, along with your product serial number, is sent to Autodesk and is used to generate a network license file that enables you to run the NLM.

Your Host Name is the name of your computer or server and is a unique identifier - up to 255 characters long - that consists of numbers and letters.

Your Physical Address refers to the physical address of the Ethernet connection to your computer or server.  It is twelve characters long, and is a combination of numbers (0 through 9) and letters (A through F) in the following format: XX-XX-XX-XX-XX-XX.  This may also be referred to as your MAC (Media Access Control) Address, Host ID or Server ID.

There are different methods for finding this information, depending on the operating system you are using to run your network license.

Command Prompt (Windows only)

To find your Host Name and Physical Address using the Windows Command Prompt, follow the below steps:

  1. Open the Command Prompt window by clicking on Start ➤ (All) Programs ➤ Accessories ➤ Command Prompt

    Note: If you do not have access to the Command Prompt, please contact your IT department, or someone with administrative rights to your machine, to help you locate the information.

  1. Type ipconfig/all and press the Enter key.

  1. Your Host Name will appear at the top, under the section Windows IP Configuration.

    Your Physical Address will appear under the section Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection.

    Note: Do not use the physical address for any Wireless or Bluetooth devices, as these are not valid and your Network license will not work.  If there is more than one physical Ethernet connection, it does not matter which one you use.

  1. Close the Command Prompt window.


LMTOOLS (Windows only)

To find your Host Name and Physical Address using the LMTOOLS utility, follow the below steps:

  1. Open the LMTOOLS utility by clicking Start ➤ All Programs ➤ Autodesk ➤ Network License Manager ➤ LMTOOLS Utility.

  1. Click on the Systems Settings tab.

  1. In the left column titled Hostid Settings you will find your Host Name located in the Computer/Hostname box and your Physical Address located in the Ethernet Address box.

    Note: If your server has more than one Ethernet adapter, select one that corresponds to a physical network adapter.  If you are using a Mac OS X computer with more than one network card, you must use the address of the primary network card.

  1. Close LMTOOLS.


Terminal Window (Linux or Mac)

To find your Host Name and Physical Address using a Mac or Linux Terminal Window, follow the below steps:

  1. From your Utilities, launch a Terminal window.

  1. Go to the directory where lmutil is installed.

  1. Retrieve your Host Name by entering the following in Terminal:

    <prompt>./lmutil lmhostid –hostname

    Your Host Name is displayed.

  1. Retrieve your Physical Address ( or Host ID) by entering the following in Terminal:

    <prompt>./lmutil lmhostid

    Your Physical Address is displayed.

  1. Close the Terminal Window.
