A valid license could not be obtained by the network license manager

Issue

You already have a previous version of Autodesk Algor Simulation installed to your computer and is served by an Autodesk FlexLm License Server. You have tried to install a new version of the Autodesk Algor Simulation software, but receive the following message while trying to use the software: "A valid license could not be obtained by the network license manager." (Figure 1)

Solution

You can solve this issue by obtaining and installing a new license file for this new version of Autodesk Algor Simulation software.  Each major version of Autodesk software is associated with a unique serial number.  Each serial number has its own license file.  The previous version license file will not allow the new version of Autodesk Algor Simulation to function.  You will need to obtain a new license file by following three general steps:

  1. Obtain server computer name and ethernet address from LMTOOLS.exe
  2. Visit registration site https://register.autodesk.com/ and generate a license file
  3. Replace your existing license file on the license server, and restart the license service.

Step 1

You can access LMTOOLS by one of two methods from the license server computer:

  • Access "START|PROGRAMS|AUTODESK|NETWORK LICENSE MANAGER|LMTOOLS Utility"
  • Navigate through windows explorer to "C:\Program Files\Autodesk Network License Manager\" and double-click "LMTOOLS.exe"

Access the second tab "System Settings" in LMTOOLS, and copy the "Computer/Hostname" and "Ethernet Address" (Only copy the first 12 digit alpha numeric address if multiple addressed are listed). See Figure 2

Step 2

Gererate a new license file by:

  • Visit the https://register.autodesk.com/ web address
  • Log on to your account by entering your user id and password
  • Enter your new Autodesk Algor Simulation serial number and choose "Next"
  • In the field titled "Server 1 hostname" enter your "Computer/Hostname" collected from LMTOOLS
  • In the field titled "Server 1ID", enter your "Ethernet Address" collected from LMTOOLS and choose "Next"
  • Choose the "Save License File" button and save the new license file to the "C:\Program Files\Autodesk Network License Manager\" directory

Step 3

If you intend to provide licensing for both versions of Autodesk Algor Simulation simultaneously, then you should append your original license file with the new license file.  Otherwise, you may choose to replace your original license file with the new license file.

  • Access the "START/STOP/REREAD" tab in LMTOOLS, activate the "Force Server Shutdown" checkbox and choose the "Stop Server" button
  • To append your original license file, open both license files in Notepad and copy the entire contents of the new license file and paste into the end of the original license file then save and close the original license file
  • To replace your original license file, delete the original license file, then rename the new license file to the original license file name
  • Choose the "Start Server" button in LMTOOLS
