Autodesk Softimage Services & Support

Resetting user preferences and customizations

Issue

Whenever you start have problems (such as crashes, error messages, or strange behavior) with Softimage, try running runonce.bat and renaming your User folder. Especially if Softimage starts acting weirdly where just yesterday everything was just fine.

Renaming your User folder is an easy way to reset Softimage to the factory default configuration. The User folder is where Softimage stores custom preferences as well as user-defined layouts, views, plugins and addons.

Solution

Rename your User folder. The User folder is where XSI stores custom preferences as well as user-defined layouts, views, plugins and addons.

  1. Exit Softimage.

  2. Rename your User folder (for example, rename C:\users\stblair\Autodesk\Softimage_2010_x64 to C:\users\stblair\Autodesk\Softimage_2010_x64.bak).

This resets all the preferences to the factory defaults.

  3. Start Softimage. Softimage creates a new User folder at startup.

If you don't want to lose all your plugins, addons, and scripts, try renaming just the %XSI_USERHOME%\Data\Preferences folder. If that fixes the problem, then it was just a problem with the user preferences.

However, if the problem persists, you will have to try renaming the whole User folder. You can always move your plugins and addons back after.
