Autodesk 3ds Max Design Services & Support

Creating multiple license server services

Issue

You want to set up a network license server to serve licenses for products that use different vendor daemons. For example, you have Maya 2011 on Subscription and you want to run a previous version of Maya, such as Maya 2009. Maya 2011 uses the adskflex vendor daemon, while Maya 2009 uses sgiawd, so you cannot combine the license files.

Solution

When products use different vendor daemons, you need to create two license server services in LMTOOLS: one license server service for the adskflex vendor daemon, and one service for the sgiawd licenses.

This table lists the vendor daemons used by different products. When two products use the same vendor daemon, you can combine the license files. Otherwise you have to create separate license server services.

ProductVendor Daemon
3ds Max (all versions)adskflex
3ds Max Design (all versions)adskflex
Softimage 7.5 and lateradskflex
Maya 2010 and lateradskflex
Mudbox 2010 and lateradskflex
MotionBuilder 2010 and lateradskflex
Maya 2009 and earliersgiawd
Mudbox 2009 and earliersgiawd
MotionBuilder 2009 and earliersgiawd

Install the Network License Managers

First, you need to install the license servers for both the ADSKFLEX products (e.g. Maya 2010 and later) and the SGIAWD products (e.g. Maya 2009 and earlier).

Create the two license server services

Create a license server service for the sgiawd product:

  1. Start LMTOOLS (click Start > All Programs > Autodesk > Network License Manager > LMTOOLS utility).
  2. Click Configuration using Services.
  3. Click on the Config Services tab.
  4. In the Service Name box, type a name for the new service. We recommend a name that indicates the Vendor daemon or the software package. For example, "SGIAWD License Server" or "Mudbox 2009 License Server".
  5. Set the paths to point to the relevant product’s license server service and files:

    Path to LMGRD.EXE C:\Program Files\Common Files\Alias Shared\Licensing\etc\lmgrd.exe
    Path to license file C:\FlexLM\aw_server.dat
Path to debug log file  C:\FlexLM\machine_name.log
  6. Select the Use Services and Start Server at Power Up check boxes.
  7. Click Save Service.
  8. Click the Start/Stop/Reread tab and click Start Server.
  9. To confirm that the server is running, click the Server Status tab and then click Perform Status Enquiry.

Create a license server service for the adskflex product:

  1. Start LMTOOLS (click Start > All Programs > Autodesk > Network License Manager > LMTOOLS utility).
  2. Click on the Config Services tab.
  3. In the Service Name box, type a name for the new service. We recommend a name that indicates the Vendor daemon or the software package. For example, "ADSKFLEX License Server" or "Maya License Server".
  4. Set the paths to point to the relevant product’s license server service and files:

    Path to LMGRD.EXE C:\Program Files\Autodesk Network License Manager\lmgrd.exe
Path to license file C:\Program Files\Autodesk Network License Manager\License\license.lic
Path to debug log file  C:\Program Files\Autodesk Network License Manager\machine_name.log

  5. Select the Use Services and Start Server at Power Up check boxes.
  6. Click Save Service.
  7. Click the Start/Stop/Reread tab and click Start Server.
  8. To confirm that the server is running, click the Server Status tab and then click Perform Status Enquiry.
