Rendering to QuickTime MOV format - Support on MotionBuilder 2013 64-Bit

Issue

MotionBuilder 2013 has added enhanced support for the Apple QuickTime format for users running the 64-Bit version of the software.

Please note: Previous versions of MotionBuilder do not included this support.

The following workflows are affected-

Rendering to MOV

  1. Select File > Render from within MotionBuilder.
  2. From the Render Settings window choose the drop-down menu entitled "Output-Format:"

Result: The MOV format is listed and available as a render output format in MotionBuilder 2013 64-Bit.

Background Plate

  • You attempt to add a MOV video file for use as a video texture or camera background plate within MotionBuilder.

Result: the MOV file is available as a supported media type when adding new media to the scene in MotionBuilder 2013 64-Bit.

Additional information on the enhanced support for QuickTime in MotionBuilder 2013 64-Bit can be found in the MotionBuilder documentation. For additional information on how this limitation affects previous versions of MotionBuilder, please see the solution section below.

Solution

The additional functionality to support QuickTime on 64-Bit is an enhancement added in MotionBuilder 2013 64-Bit.

For users running MotionBuilder 2012 and other previous versions, support for QuickTime is not available to users running the 64-Bit version of MotionBuilder.

It may be possible to work-around this issue in previous versions of MotionBuilder as follows:-

  • Install the 32-Bit version of MotionBuilder on 64-Bit install of Windows. This will allow you to run the 32-Bit version of MotionBuilder if you need to work with QuickTime media.

Note:- To install the 32 bit version of MotionBuilder on 64-Bit operating system, you will need to choose the custom install option or configure the install manually during install.
