Rendering or material appears black

Issue

When you rendered a scene, the resulting image or materials appeared dark.

Solution

The following are some common areas to verify for this topic:

  1. Verify that the light source definition is not being blocked by any model geometry and that it is not above the ceiling plane. Turn on the definitions in the Visibility\Graphic Overrides dialog box, expand Lighting Fixtures, and select the Light Source check box.
  2. Try adding an additional light, ideally a “Lighting Fixtures”, “Floor Lamp - Torchiere.rfa”. Re-render the scene afterwards to see if the lighting is the same. This is an easy method to isolate the issue to the existing fixtures or the rendering settings.
  3. In the Rendering dialog box, under Adjust Exposure, try modifying the Exposure Value to see if the scene is set too dark. Verify if the default settings are too dark for the scene.
  4. In the Rendering dialog box, verify that the Lighting Scheme includes some Artificial lights.
  5. In the Rendering dialog box, under Artificial Lights, verify lights are “checked” On. Also, verify that Dimming is set to a value greater than 0. (Note: 1 is the default value.)
  6. Verify whether there are any missing material texture map errors when rendering. Missing materials will be rendered in black. A warning dialog will be displayed at the end of the rendering if custom material files cannot be located or rendered.
