Best practices for printing

Issue

You want to know the best practices to use when printing in order to improve performance and stability.

Solution

The following is a list of best practices to use when printing:

  • Vector printing is usually faster than raster. Use this option if available (shadows turned off, no raster images, etc.).
  • Unload all types of links that are not necessary for a particular view when being printed or exported. This should reduce the memory resources needed to open the file.
  • If you are working on a workshared file and experience issues plotting, ask the users who need to plot or export to detach their local copies and work locally. This will conserve network resources and reduce project chatter between local and central files.
  • Turn off shadows for all printed views if they are not needed.
  • Most printer drivers offer an Avoid out of Memory option. Enable this option if you experience a crash or reach the buffer’s limits when printing. Refer to your printer’s manufacturer for further information.
  • Do not open other applications while plotting. For example, avoid opening AutoCAD to check the results of previous exports.
  • The Batch Print Utility will help you print and manage large number of drawings. This utility is available in the Subscription Center for Subscription Customers.

For additional best practices, refer to the “General Printing Tips” section of the Revit User’s Guide.
