Problems configuring the Autodesk Network License Manager (FLEXnet)

Issue

When you tried to configure the Autodesk Network License Manager (FLEXnet), you either experienced problems or received errors.

Solution

For specific system requirements and step-by-step installation and configuration instructions, you should refer to the Network Licensing Guide (acad_nlg.pdf) and Network Administrator's Guide (acad_nag.pdf) located on the software installation disk or online help. Reading these documents is a prerequisite for successful license manager configuration and administration. Common setup and system requirement questions are listed below:

Common Autodesk Network License Manager (FlexLM) problems and errors are listed below. Try these solutions first, and then review further instructions if the problem persists.

If these solutions do not answer your Autodesk Network License Manager questions or resolve the problem, the additional tests below will help determine the cause of the issue.

  • Refer to the attached 2008 FlexLM Quick Reference (requires Autodesk DesignReview) for options within LMTOOLS.
  • The debug log file is not an optional setting and the license manager will not start correctly without a valid path and file name specified. You should make sure that you specified a location and file name for the debug log on the Config Services tab of LMTOOLS.
  • On the Config Services tab, make sure that all three paths are filled out completely and point to local locations. It is strongly recommended that the license file and debug log file reside within the Autodesk Network License Manager installation folder and not in a separate folder or drive. Make sure that the Use Services and Start Server at Powerup options are enabled as well or the license manager will not run once LMTOOLS is closed or the license manager machine is rebooted.
  • Only one service can be configured in LMTOOLS for Autodesk software. So you should combine multiple Autodesk product license files into a single file and configure them as a single service. Refer to the following solution for more information: Combining Autodesk® license files.
  • Make sure that the Configuration Using Services option is selected on the Service/License File tab of LMTOOLS. Autodesk products do not support the Configuration Using License File method.
  • Autodesk product licenses do not support the Utilities, Server Diags or Borrowing tabs in LMTOOLS. These tabs exist to support other products that use FlexLM and they should not be used when configuring or troubleshooting the Autodesk Network License Manager. For information about controlling license borrowing, you should refer to the Network Licensing Guide (acad_nlg.pdf) and the Options File whitepaper.
  • If you are experiencing problems with the Server Status tab > Perform Status Enquiry, make sure that the "LMTOOLS Ignores License File Path Environment Variables" option is selected on the Service/License File tab and run the Status Enquiry again. In many cases this will correct erroneous Status Enquiries.

If you have worked through the standard troubleshooting steps and you were not able to resolve the issue, follow this link for additional technical assistance.

Please collect the following information from your system before requesting technical assistance:

  • Screenshots of any error messages encountered
  • License file currently in use at each license manager
  • Options file in use at each license manager (if applicable)
  • Debug log file in use at each license manager
  • Copy and paste from LMTOOLS > Server Status tab > Perform Status Enquiry
