Administrative privileges error occurs when running AutoCAD® 2008-based programs as a restricted user

Issue

When you tried to run an AutoCAD® 2008-based program as a limited or restricted user, the following error message was displayed:

Error :: Installation of <ProductName> requires Administrator Privileges. Please log in with administrator rights before attempting installation of <ProductName>.

Solution

If you are installing from a network or multi-seat standalone deployment

Download the following hotfix, which prevents this problem from occurring:

This hotfix will resolve the problem when the software is installed, and the following solution will not be necessary.

If you are using a standalone version of AutoCAD®

This error may occur if a restricted user attempts to start the program using the Start menu icon. The Start menu shortcuts advertise features that a restricted user cannot install. This error will not occur if the Desktop shortcut is used to start the product instead.

This problem can be resolved by creating a new Start menu icon as follows:

1. Using Windows Explorer, browse to the following folder:
   
   %ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Start Menu\Programs\Autodesk\<ProductName>
   
   Note: <ProductName> is the actual name of the product in question (for example, AutoCAD® 2008).
   
   
2. Delete the product shortcut located in this folder.
3. Copy the Desktop shortcut for your product to this folder.
4. Test that the user can now successfully start the product from the Start menu.
