James P. Washabaugh, Carnegie Mellon University

Fourth-Year Architecture Student
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

James Washabaugh uses Autodesk Revit® Architecture to design unique residential homes like this boathouse. By learning how to create a building information model, James is delving into one of his favorite themes: how design truly affects the environment.

“Everyone spends time in buildings every day,” says James. “Being able to impact someone’s experience through my design decisions is exciting.” But James isn’t just interested in design aesthetics; he’s also learning how buildings influence the environment. “By making environmentally conscious design decisions, I can personally affect the quality of life of many different people.”

James is preparing for a future in architecture and sustainable design by learning Revit Architecture, a central element of building information modeling (BIM) software used by professionals throughout the architecture field. He spent his summer break as an intern with Perkins Eastman Architects in Pittsburgh. But this wasn’t your typical summer internship – James got plenty of hands-on experience with professional architects, producing construction documents and drawing details. James was even credited as the project team administrator for a recreation center in Ohio that is expected to receive LEED Gold certification.

James believes Autodesk technology is the industry standard in architecture, and that gaining a firm grasp of Revit® Architecture will allowed him to match the technical ability of seasoned professionals who are just learning BIM techniques. “Fast, efficient skills using Autodesk technology is a must,” he says.
