The design joint-venture team H5M has broken new ground with its innovative use of building information modeling (BIM) on the Port Mann/Highway 1 (PMH1) project. Initiated in 2007 by the Ministry of Transportation of British Columbia, PMH1 will create a sustainable transportation network for a strategic corridor in the greater Vancouver area of British Columbia, Canada.
|In this podcast, Chris Mealing, Design Manager at H5M, describes how BIM is changing the way infrastructure projects are designed.|
H5M is the design joint-venture team of Hatch Mott MacDonald (HMM) and the MMM Group. H5M is leading a team of 12 engineering firms in the design of all onshore works for the PMH1 project. Serving as the senior partner on the H5M joint-venture team, HMM is a 1,900-person, full-service infrastructure, transportation, and environmental engineering company.
The PMH1 project is designed to address current and future transportation needs in greater Vancouver. The project involves the construction of a new Port Mann Bridge and widening 37 kilometers of Highway 1, the Trans-Canada Highway linking Vancouver to the rest of British Columbia and Canada. Other onshore works include reconstruction of 13 interchanges and construction or rehabilitation of over 42 onshore bridges. The expected design and construction period is 5 years, and project construction must accommodate existing traffic.
In 2008, the H5M joint-venture committed to utilizing a BIM process for the entire PMH1 project. H5M has undertaken the complete civil design of this complex highway and bridge project using 60 licenses of AutoCAD® Civil 3D® software, Autodesk’s BIM solution for civil engineering. To date, this approach has enabled:
As of August 2009, the design of the project is about 40% complete. With an estimated construction cost of (CDN) $2.46 billion, PMH1 is one of the largest transportation projects currently underway in North America utilizing Civil 3D software.

To help ensure project success, H5M made a significant commitment to training and best-practice development. IMAGINiT Technologies, HMM’s Autodesk Authorized Reseller, provided the team with initial product training and implementation services. Autodesk Consulting is providing ongoing services including data sharing guidance, advanced product training, and production workflow reengineering. Due to the sheer size of the project, the fast-track requirements, and the multi-discipline/multi-firm approach, H5M has worked with Autodesk Consulting to redefine efficiency and be a leader in the delivery of complex transportation projects.
