Harley-Davidson - The Museum Won Autodesk BIM Award [Chinese]
The article reported on Autodesk’s announcement of Mortenson Construction being selected to receive Autodesk BIM Award. Mortenson Construction is recognized for its use of Autodesk product portfolio software, including Revit Architecture, Revit MEP, Revit Structure, AutoCAD Civil 3D, AutoCAD MEP and Navisworks. Making BIM the Foundation: HNTB Federal Designs Two Successful Projects Using BIM
A byline, by Lauren Browne, ConnectPress Editor, reported that HNTB Federal recently designed two government buildings, the U.S. Army Human Resources Center of Excellence at Fort Knox and phase I Wheeled and Tracked Vehicle Maintenance Training School at Fort Lee using BIM as the foundation of the projects. Browne noted that for both projects HNTB Federal used a combination of Autodesk Revit MEP, Revit Structure, Revit Architecture, Navisworks and 3ds Max Design. The use of BIM was stated in the proposal, providing an efficient modeling process that allowed designers to all stay on the same page and collaborate. Browne also mentioned that in the construction process, the BIM model was used for a 4D Navisworks sequencing model to help with phasing and sequencing the construction and to understand how the project was to be built. Further, Browne added that HNTB Federal was also selected to receive an Autodesk BIM Experience Award because of its impressive implementation of BIM in such large-scale project.

Autodesk Announced New Versions of Revit [Spanish]
Autodesk announced the availability of new versions of Revit BIM, designed for personal computers using 64 bits Windows operating systems. This operation applies to Revit Architecture 2009, Revit Structure 2009 and Revit MEP 2009. The beta testers have reported that the new software applications offer a better performance and stability for tasks that require plenty of memory such as rendering, printing, updating of model and import and export files. Jamie Richardson, Managing Partner & CAD, in Ericksen Roed & Associates, said, "We've been in beta testing phase of the software for 64-bit Revit Structure and the increase in efficiency and productivity are impressive."

Fair Fills Halls Of IDF: "Add On" For Engineering [Portuguese]

A case study by Autodesk revealed that New Zealand architectural and design firm ArcHaus is using Autodesk Revit Architecture and Autodesk 3ds Max software for larger projects more efficiently while satisfying their creative impulses. Jason Howden spoke with Autodesk about life at ArcHaus, sustainable design, and a challenging project known as Metropol. Howden, said, Revit Architecture was a critical design tool in the early stages of Metropol, “We were able to try all kinds of possibilities in 3D in a short space of time. In fact, we were able to turn out 4 overall designs of the project inside of one week. That simply wouldn’t have been possible before. The flexibility and speed of the software really helped us test options and scenarios. Needless to say, Autodesk software is tightly integrated into our entire design process.”

Autodesk Seeks LEED Platinum for Waltham Headquarters
Autodesk Products – Navisworks, Revit Architecture, Revit MEP, Ecotect
A byline, by Preston Koerner, commented on Autodesk Headquarter's new building in East Coast. For the tenant improvements, the architect, owner, and builder collaborated through integrated project delivery (IPD) using BIM and Autodesk software, such as Navisworks, Revit Architecture, Revit MEP, and Ecotect. Further, Koerner noted that the 65,000 square foot building was designed using Autodesk software, which enabled the team to decide on various improvements and learn how such decisions affected LEED criteria. The design and build teams were also able to pinpoint redundancies and eliminate waste and extra spending through IPD.

Interoperability: Autodesk Inventor, AEC Exchange, and the Secret of BIM
A byline, by Jonathan Landeros, reported on the increasing need for interoperability between the manufacturing community and the world of BIM used by the architectural community. Landeros noted that as each community employed tools like Inventor and Revit to move information more efficiently, it was found that the ability for both industries to move that intelligence between one another hadn’t improved. So, tools like Inventor AEC Exchange tool, have built the first high-speed line across them. Landeros discussed on how a model created in Autodesk Inventor can be quickly and easily transferred into Autodesk Revit and added that not only is the data transferred rapidly, AEC Exchange ensures that the information transferred is what’s critical to the Revit designer.

Commercial Real Estate Getting In on the Ground Floor
A byline, by Martin Cash, reported on the status of the three tower cranes that will soon start sprouting at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights construction site at The Forks. Todd Craigen, Construction Manager for PCL Construction, the project's general contractor, said, "All the subcontractors are working off the same 3-D modelling using Autodesk Revit architecture software so that when a change is made, it's automatically updated across the project. It also allows us to do something called clash detection". Cash also discussed about various other features of the towers.

Modeling Green Engineers and Designers Still Discovering Sustainable Benefits of BIM
A byline by Diane Greer, reported on BIM noting that the engineers and designers are still discovering the sustainable benefits of BIM. Skidmore, Owings & Merrill’s Seletsky says a transfer protocol is needed that allows two-way communications between BIM and the analysis tool. “I can do an analysis of my Revit [BIM] model using Ecotect [energy analysis tool], but what I can’t do is shoot the information back in the other direction,” he adds. “I can’t apply certain constraints in Ecotect and see what the resulting geometry or BIM model is going to be.”

Autodesk Provides Drivers with A 3-D Preview of Rebuilt Doyle Drive
A byline, by Mark Prado, reported that Autodesk has developed software, which is being used by the California Department of Transportation that gives the public as well as contractors, engineers and others working on the major San Francisco highway project a critical preview of the work. Revit Architecture 2010 (Cadalyst Labs Review)
A byline, by Patrick Davis, reviewed on Autodesk’s Revit Architecture 2010 and its new ribbon user interface (UI). Davis noted that the new UI helps new users migrate more easily to Revit Architecture from other products and helps existing users discover features more easily. Davis mentioned that there have been mixed responses on the usage of new UI.  According to Davis, UI will require more adjustment time than usual for some users and felt that the conceptual design tools are very cool. Further, Davis discussed about his experience with the Revit Architecture 2010 beta version and commented that it is not the best release ever, but it offers many good features.

A byline, by Lachmi Khemlani, reviewed the Revit Architecture 2010, Autodesk’s BIM application for architectural design that features a redesigned user interface and a new conceptual design environment. Khemlani noted that Revit Architecture 2010 sports the ribbon interface popularized by Microsoft which has been implemented in Revit. Revit’s conceptual modeling environment is much more powerful and sophisticated however, it lacks the fluidity and ease of use of tools such as SketchUp and the new Bonzai. Khemlani added that he was happy to see that a couple of limitations of Revit Architecture 2009 have been fixed and he also rated Revit Architecture 2010 as a fairly substantial and compelling release, with the interface redesign and the brand new conceptual modeling environment.

EPA, Autodesk Team On Energy-Efficient Building Designs

Zweigwhite Report: Firms Still Planning To Expand BIM Usage This Year  
A byline, by Jeff Yoders, reported about Zweigwhite's recently released 2009 "Information Technology Survey of Architecture, Engineering, Planning, & Environmental Consulting Firm." The survey revealed some very positive signs for BIM adoption and IT investment in BIM applications. Yoders noted that the leaders of 97 firms from every region in the U.S. and many different firm sizes had completed the survey. According to the survey, 77% of respondents are using 3D CADD, AutoCAD still dominated the market with 81%, and however, 61% of firm leaders said their firms are using Revit.

Autodesk Practices What It Preaches When It Comes To Green Design

Canadian Architects Bring Experience to Canada BIM Council

According to them, BIM is set at some point to transform the design and construction industry. Loreto, who has practiced architecture in southern Ontario for more than 20 years, spoke positively about Revit and said, “I chose Revit Technologies as my software platform. It really allowed me to carry out the functions of an architect without having to worry about being a software programmer”. Loreto also mentioned that there have been “significant” refinements of the Revit software since 2000, which is now venturing into the realm of virtual construction modeling.

Salce also gave examples of why more designers aren’t adopting sustainable design, but Salce provided reasons to prove those reasons wrong. Salce listed out the tools during the webcast that designers can use in coordination with design software like Revit. Salce then provided examples from within Revit Architecture to demonstrate how easy it is to use these tools with BIM model to achieve LEED requirements.

O. Smith Water Products Co. Offers 3-D Models for Specifying Engineers via Revit

CSI Explains Subcontractor's Role in Integrated Project Delivery                            
The article reported on the recent webinar presented by the Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) on Integrated Project Delivery (IPD). The webinar explained how IPD differs from traditional delivery methods, how it coexists with BIM and what it means for subcontractors. Erin Rae Hoffer AIA LEED AP CSI, Autodesk, explained that IPD begins the "movement from the idea of agreements as separate documents … toward [being] all one entity. Through IPD, the owner, designers, contractors and subcontractors are closely involved in creating a finished product.” The article also noted that Autodesk Revit Headquarters in Waltham, Massachusetts, was the case study presented during the webinar to better explain IPD.

The blogger discussed the Centrepoint Architecture, where the designers took an initiative to place solar panels for the Proximity Hotel in Greensboro. According to Centrepoint’s Tom Murphy, AIA, instead of placing the hotel’s rooftop solar panels out of sight, they propped the 100-panel array 10 feet in the air, creating a “crown of black triangles” that tie in with the hotel’s signage and modern industrial design aesthetic. Murphy added, “Using the Revit BIM 3D model, the design team studied the solar installation from several vantage points and adjusted the platform size, configuration, and location to achieve the desired look. With the BIM model, we were able to view what the panels would look like from the nearby Interstate, all entrance points, and from down below, and made necessary adjustments to create the best effect.” The solar panels are expected to help Proximity use 39% less energy than comparable hotels.

A case study by Autodesk revealed that New Zealand architectural and design firm ArcHaus is using Autodesk Revit Architecture and Autodesk 3ds Max software for larger projects more efficiently while satisfying their creative impulses. Jason Howden spoke with Autodesk about life at ArcHaus, sustainable design, and a challenging project known as Metropol. Howden, said, Revit Architecture was a critical design tool in the early stages of Metropol, “We were able to try all kinds of possibilities in 3D in a short space of time. In fact, we were able to turn out 4 overall designs of the project inside of one week. That simply wouldn’t have been possible before. The flexibility and speed of the software really helped us test options and scenarios. Needless to say, Autodesk software is tightly integrated into our entire design process.”

Autodesk Products – Revit.  A byline, by Coeur d'Alene, ID-based Ulf Wolf writer, reported on Building Information Modeling (BIM). d'Alene noted that BIM is not just the latest release of CAD software; it is an entirely new way of looking at the design and construction of a building which allows you to not only visualize, but to test various design options while also resolving most, if not all, conflicts at the "drafting table" rather than at the building site. Further, d'Alene as an example briefed DLR Group's most recent BIM project: The new Happy Valley City Hall. d'Alene mentioned that Jason Tuck, Community and Economic Development Director, was the City's Project Manager for the new construction, and could not be happier with the process. He says, "DLR's use of Revit (Autodesk's BIM software) resulted in a lack of major change orders, which certainly evidenced a smooth project, there were zero unforeseen changes. What changes occurred were owner driven.”

For the tenant improvements, the architect, owner, and builder collaborated through integrated project delivery (IPD) using BIM and Autodesk software, such as Navisworks, Revit Architecture, Revit MEP, and Ecotect. Further, Koerner noted that the 65,000 square foot building was designed using Autodesk software, which enabled the team to decide on various improvements and learn how such decisions affected LEED criteria.  The design and build teams were also able to pinpoint redundancies and eliminate waste and extra spending through IPD.
