Task Scheduler—Migration, R10This Skill Builder demonstrates how to use Task Scheduler to migrate Autodesk Inventor files. The following workflow corresponds to the R10 version of Task Scheduler. To complete the workflow, you need at least one file that was last saved in a release earlier than R10. Tip: Use iProperties to confirm with which release a file was last saved. - Right-click the file in a Microsoft Explorer window, and then select iProperties.
- Select the Details tab, and then note the release version in the Last update with field.
- Alternatively, select the General tab and note the date in the Modified field.
| - To open Task Scheduler, click Start > Programs > (directory where Autodesk Inventor is installed) > Autodesk Inventor 10 > Tools > Task Scheduler.
Tip: Create a shortcut and add to your Quick Launch toolbar or desktop.
Task Scheduler is designed to work with files contained in a project mapping (but can be used with files not located in a project). The following steps describe how to migrate files contained in a project. - Select Create Task > Migrate Files from the main menu.
- Click the Browse button next to the Project field.
- In the Project Setting dialog box, double-click an appropriate project, and then click OK.
- In the Migrate Files dialog box, click Add, and then select Add Folder.
- In the Browse for Folder dialog box, notice that the root folder for the specified project is selected by default. Click OK.
The project folder is added as the Input Folder. Notice that because Recursive is selected, all folders nested in that folder will be included in the migration task. To include only files located directly in the root folder, click the Recursive icon to remove the checkmark. Notice also in the File Name column that you can filter the file type. Click on the list of file extensions, and then select the desired extension. Only files with the specified extension will be included in the task If we run the migration with the current settings, all files contained in the project folder will be processed. For expediency, we will migrate only a single file. - Highlight the task row, and then click Delete.
- Click Add, and then select Add File.
- Select a file in the Open dialog box, and then click Open
Note: It is recommended that you back up this file before proceeding.
- In the Task Name field, type a name for the task.
- Ensure that Once is selected in the Frequency field, and that today’s date is specified in the Start Date field.
- Ensure the Log File check box is selected. Click the Browse button, enter a file name for the log file, and then specify a convenient location.
Note: When you specify a log file for a task, that log file is unique to that task and is not shared by other tasks. If you do not specify a unique log file, then the default log is used, located in Documents and Settings\(user name)\Local Settings\Temp\TaskScheduler.log. You can change the location and name of the default log: from the main menu select Settings > Options, click the Browse button, select a location and enter a name. All tasks without a unique log file are reported in this file.
- Click Options, and then ensure that Purge Old Versions is not selected. Click OK in the Migration Options dialog box.
- Note the time as shown by the system clock on the right side of the system taskbar.
- In the Start Time field, specify a time two minutes later than the system time. Alternatively, click the Submit Now check box to run the task immediately after you click OK.
- Click OK.
- Enter your Windows password in the Authentication dialog box.
The migration task runs at the specified time. Notice that Autodesk Inventor need not be open to perform the task. The Status column updates per the current state of the process. The lower right pane summarizes the selected, completed task. - Once the task is complete, open the log file. The ‘Information for every…’ section defines the terms used in the Test column.
This particular file migrated successfully. If there are problems with the migration process, the log file notes the problems. Let’s take a look at a few other options and details. - In the Task Scheduler window, right-click the task and then select Edit.
- In the Migrate Files dialog box, click Add, and then select Add File.
- Browse to and select a file outside the project mapping. Notice that files need not be contained in a project mapping to be included in the task.
You can run the task if you want. When finished, highlight the file in the Migrate Files dialog, and then click Delete. - In the Migrate Files dialog box, highlight your original test file, and then click Delete. At this point, the Task list field should be empty.
- Click Add, and then select Add Project.
Notice that the Add button is disabled: when you select Add Project, the entire project is added and it is inferred that you want to migrate only files contained in that project.
- Click Cancel.
Caution: Perform the following steps only if you do not need the old versions of your test file. If your file or file set is accompanied by an Old Versions folder, you can purge those versions with the migration task. - Highlight the task in the Task Scheduler window, and then select Edit.
- Click Options, and then select Purge Old Versions. Click OK.
- Select Submit Now, and then click OK to run the task again.
Notice that the previous versions of your test file have been removed.
- Highlight the task in the Task Scheduler window, and then select Edit.
- Click Options.
One option you probably do not want to use with migration is Compact Model History. Compact Model History removes the B-Rep history from a file. Though the file size can be greatly reduced, initial edits to the file will be slower since all features preceding the edited feature must be re-computed. This option is useful when further changes are unlikely, as when archiving or releasing the model. You can review the Task Scheduler Help for further information on the Migrate Options dialog box, and for general assistance with Task Scheduler.
Use the Task Tree and Task Buttons to filter the view of your tasks. For example, when you select the Migrate Files task button, only migration tasks display in the upper-right pane. When you select Today in the Task Tree, tasks that have run, are running, will run, or were scheduled today, including repetitive tasks, are displayed, as filtered by the selected task button. Finally, to delete a task, right-click the task, and then select Delete. You can also Ctrl-click to selectively highlight multiple tasks, or Shift-click to span a group of tasks. |
