Building Core ModelerApril 4–May 13, 2011, and June 20–July 2, 2011 In the Autodesk® IDEA Studio, Georgia Institute of Technology PhD student Marcelo Bernal used Autodesk® Revit® Architecture software to automate the generation of building cores for variable building shapes. Building Core Design Bernal created a plug-in for Revit Architecture to generate building cores that facilitate design decisions. The plug-in creates templates that enable designers to compare alternatives, use previous experience, and assess the viability of design options in early stages. The Modeler Years of experience give a designer an innate sense of what works and what does not. The building core modeler attempts to accelerate that process by distilling expert knowledge into computable rules, minimizing design effort and improving accuracy. Real-Time Feedback The building core modeler integrates various design rules to generate an editable model. From this preliminary Building Information Modeling (BIM) template, the designer obtains real-time feedback about different design aspects for decision making.
