Automated Self-Paced Learning Through Gaming Mechanics
January 4-28, 2011
In the Autodesk IDEA Studio, Olin College of Engineering students explored how gaming mechanics can enhance the software learning experience. Over the course of the month, the team quickly iterated through 5 versions of a concept for a learning map environment.
Inspired by the technology tree structure of popular video games, the students devised a linear system of successive nodes. They layered game metaphors, such as achievements and advancements, into the technology tree in order to motivate learning exploration and aspiration. The Olin College students imagined a system in which users would sequentially unlock levels, conquer skill sets, and venture into unknown learning terrain.
