2010 Camaro Manufacturing Facility

Company: General Motors
Industry: Automotive

Racing the Camaro to market with 3D design technology.
To assemble GM’s iconic pony car, the company needed to quickly retool a plant that was originally used for truck manufacturing. GM transformed the plant into a complete digital factory model. This 3D model enabled the team to perform virtual design reviews and identify clashes with existing infrastructure before physical retooling began, saving GM millions of dollars.

Conceptual Design

The creative process started with concept sketches that captured the designers’ artistic inspiration and established the vehicle’s unique appeal.

Design Development
Designers and engineers collaborated on the evolving vehicle design to achieve an optimal aesthetic result congruent with platform architecture.

Simulation and Analysis
Design technology enabled the analysis and optimization of plastic parts, yielding informed tooling design decisions that saved time and reduced costly rework.

Plant Design and Manufacturing Planning
Using 2D and 3D facility layout tools and factory visualization software helped mitigate the challenges of the automotive plant changeover and planning process.

Marketing and Advertising
Modeling, animation, and rendering software enabled the creation of rich visual effects that communicated the final design to consumers. Design decisions were facilitated through the use of high-end, photorealistic visualization software.
